Generative AI Policy

Jurnal Pranata Hukum recognizes the growing use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic research and scholarly writing. This policy establishes principles for the responsible, transparent, and ethical use of generative AI in manuscript preparation, submission, peer review, and editorial activities. The use of AI must not compromise academic integrity, research originality, confidentiality, or the reliability of published scholarship.

Use of Generative AI by Authors

Authors may use generative AI tools to assist with limited tasks, such as language improvement, grammar correction, translation, formatting, or organizing ideas. However, authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and final content of their manuscripts. AI tools must not replace the authors' critical thinking, legal reasoning, independent analysis, or scholarly contribution.

Disclosure of AI Use

Authors must disclose the use of generative AI tools when such tools have made a substantive contribution to the preparation or development of the manuscript. The disclosure should identify the tool used and explain its purpose and scope of use. Authors should provide this information in an appropriate section of the manuscript, such as an AI Use Disclosure or Acknowledgments section, in accordance with the journal's submission instructions.

Routine assistance with spelling, grammar, or punctuation may be treated differently from the generation or substantive rewriting of academic content. Authors should follow the journal's applicable disclosure requirements and any instructions provided by the editor.

Prohibited and Unacceptable Use

Generative AI must not be used in ways that undermine academic integrity. Unacceptable practices include:

  • Submitting AI-generated material as original human scholarly work without appropriate disclosure when disclosure is required.
  • Using fabricated legal authorities, case law, legislation, quotations, references, research data, or findings generated by AI tools.
  • Relying on AI-generated legal analysis without independently verifying its accuracy and relevance.
  • Using AI to manipulate research results, misrepresent sources, or conceal plagiarism or other forms of misconduct.
  • Listing a generative AI tool as an author or assigning it responsibility for the manuscript's scholarly claims.

Accuracy and Verification

Authors must carefully review all AI-assisted content before submission. Legal references, statutory provisions, court decisions, quotations, citations, and other factual claims must be checked against reliable original sources. Authors are responsible for correcting errors, misleading statements, fabricated references, or inaccurate interpretations that may arise from the use of AI tools.

Use of AI by Reviewers

Reviewers must protect the confidentiality of manuscripts under review. They should not upload or disclose unpublished manuscripts, confidential reviewer reports, or identifying information to external generative AI tools when doing so could compromise confidentiality or violate applicable policies. Reviewers remain responsible for their evaluations and must not delegate their scholarly judgment to AI systems.

Use of AI by Editors

Editors must maintain confidentiality, impartiality, and editorial independence when handling submissions. AI tools must not replace editorial judgment or be used in ways that expose confidential manuscript information without appropriate authorization and safeguards. Editors remain responsible for publication decisions and for ensuring that manuscripts are assessed fairly and consistently.

Authorship and Accountability

Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors because they cannot assume responsibility for the work, approve the final manuscript, or respond to questions concerning its integrity. Human authors must meet the journal's authorship requirements and accept responsibility for the content they submit and publish.

Handling Policy Violations

Suspected violations of this policy will be assessed by the editorial team based on the available evidence and the seriousness of the concern. Depending on the circumstances, the journal may request clarification or correction, require revisions, reject a submission, or take other appropriate action under its publication ethics procedures. Any action should be proportionate and consistent with the journal's applicable policies.

Final Responsibility

The use of generative AI does not transfer responsibility for a manuscript from its authors to an AI tool. Authors, reviewers, and editors must use AI responsibly and transparently while upholding the principles of accuracy, originality, confidentiality, and academic integrity. Jurnal Pranata Hukum may review and update this policy as generative AI technologies and publication ethics standards evolve.
